Effective letters come from individuals
Letters that reflect the views of individuals carry more weight than a pre-written email. Use Greenpeace's letter as a starting point, but consider adding your own comments to increase the effectiveness of the letter.
Points to consider:
- The recipient might receive dozens of letters a day, and hundreds of letters on a single issue each week. Personalizing your letter, in particular the opening paragraph, will set it apart from others received and ensure that it is read.
- Consider making a specific request in your letter. Ask a direct question and ask for a written response.
- Remember you are writing to a person who is probably motivated by the same things you are. Be specific about why you are writing them this letter.
- After you have used this Action Centre to send your email, consider following up with a hand written letter or card that you can send in the mail.
- Finally, don't discount the power of a single letter, email or phone call. Every voice counts.
